Hunger is the biological drive to eat food. Creatures instinctively seek out food to sate their hunger - in the later games, they can use their sense of smell to aid them in their search. Some foods, like honey, provide a false sense of satiety, having a disproportionately large amount of Hunger-- in contrast to the amount of nutrition they provide.

In C3/DS, the digestive system became more complex, and three distinct kinds of hunger were recognised by creatures:

  • Hunger for Protein - most norns will instinctively seek out fruit or food-category items to satisfy this drive.
  • Hunger for Carbohydrates/Starch - most norns will instinctively seek out seed or fruit-category items to satisfy this drive.
  • Hunger for Fat - most norns will instinctively seek out seed or food-category items to satisfy this drive.

In Creatures 3 and Docking Station, this drive is most commonly stated by any creature as :"Eem x hungry for y" where x is a quantitative qualifier (quite, really, very, extremely, or intensely), y is starch, fat or protein, and Eem is the creature's name. There are agents that detect when creatures state a hunger drive, one example is the Electronic Butler (which also detects boredom statements). The Empathic Vendors in Docking Station also detect these statements, and create the appropriate type of food. Prior to Creatures 3, creatures do not have different types of hunger for different nutrients.
