High up in the branches of Yggsdrasil, the World Tree, hides the Grendel Mother. She is unseen and unheard, except she occasionally lays a Grendel Egg. She can see when there are none of her children in the world, and then she will lay a new egg, in 10 minutes. She only lays male children by default, but she-grendels have been coaxed from her in the past. None of her children are naturally fertile, though. And so she waits, and she rests . . . dreaming, perhaps, of a time when her children roamed Albia freely?

There is also a website called The Grendel Mother.
