The genus is part of the Classification system in use in all the Creatures series games. It is the category of objects to which any particular object belongs. The creatures will call any object in the same genus the same thing, and will react to it in the same way.  Therefore, it is important to make all COBs or agents in the same genus act in similar ways to allow the creatures to learn about their world effectively.

To illustrate this, imagine how confusing it would be if you played with a toy which you thought would make you less bored, but instead hurt you! People can (usually) learn to distinguish between dangerous toys and harmless toys, but creatures are simply not capable of this due to limitations in their brain structure.

As Norns are effectively "blind", and in C3/DS navigate by smells emitted by the CAOS script of an object, and the fact that there are actually very few smells (Cellular Automata) that norns understand, they will be unable to tell the difference between any given two toys.

The plural of genus is "genera".
