An artificial intelligence is a system capable of behaviour normally only seen in thinking beings. Typically these systems are built as computer software.
Narrow artificial intelligence is found in many systems these days, but "true" or "general" artificial intelligence, capable of solving at least any task that a human can solve, remains a holy grail of programming.
