{{wrongtitle|title=#creatures}}
'''#creatures''' was an [[Wikipedia:Internet Relay Chat|IRC]] channel, most popular in the period 1999 - 2001 (though it persisted in some form until early 2004). Created originally as a solution to [[JRChat]] downtime, it eventually turned into a full-time chatroom. At its peak, it had many famous members of [[CreaturesLife.net]] as regulars, including [[Eme]], [[Ping]], [[AntiNorn]], [[Ghrens]], and [[Alanna]].

<nowiki>#creatures</nowiki> was hosted on various servers, including irc.fanfic.com, irc.qchat.net, and irc.torturednorns.com (run by [[AntiNorn]]).

The channel was revived in late 2005 but later vanished, it was revived again in 2008, it currently exists on the DarkMyst server at irc.darkmyst.org and on DALnet at irc.dal.net. However since it has only recently been revived it is very empty, so come in and fill it up!

Currently, Aftran hosts the '''#creatures''' chatroom on irc.creatureschat.com. More information can be found at [[CC Chat]].

The second game in the [[Creatures series]], '''Creatures 2''' took place in [[Albia]] centuries after most of the original [[Creatures]] [[world]] was destroyed by a massive [[volcano|volcanic]] eruption, caused by the [[Lone Shee]]'s spaceship (the [[Capillata]]) taking off. Released in [[history#1998|September 1998]], it included a far larger world, more complex [[Norn]]s and ecology, and introduced the [[Ettin]]s, as well as the [[Genesplicer]] (which allowed the artificial combination of two [[Creature]]s into one).

This game is no longer available separately, but can be purchased as part of [[Creatures - The Albian Years|Creatures: The Albian Years]]. The background images for [[Creatures 2]] are available at [[C2 Back|C2 ]][[C2 Back|Back]]. There are also a set of comic strips in the Creatures 2 style entitled ''[[River and Petal]]''.

==Game Requirements==
*Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT4.0 (SP3)
*Pentium 166 or faster
*4 X CD ROM or faster
*16-Bit sound card
*2MB 16-Bit colour SVGA display adapter
(800X600 resolution minimum)
*16 MB RAM (32MB recommended)
*300MB of free hard disk space

==Compatibility==
The original version of Creatures 2 will run on Windows 2000, Windows Millenium Edition and Windows XP, but not Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10. The [[GOG Creatures Collection|GOG]] Albian Years version, however, is fully compatible with these operating systems. [[Deji]] has also found a [http://creaturescaves.com/forum.php?view=12&thread=3202 fix] to get the regular game to run on Windows Vista and Windows 7. To get the [[GOG]] version working on Windows 8 and avoid the [[Black Box of Doom]], please follow this [http://creaturescaves.com/community.php?section=Resources&view=78 this] guide instead. Please note that these fixes may not work with all versions of Creatures 2, and the game seems to suffer from severe lag on Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10.

The GOG version asks for Creatures 2 to be run in 16-bit mode. It will prompt you to change it, though you will have to change it back manually. A workaround for this can be found [http://www.gog.com/forum/creatures_series/running_creatures_2_in_32_bit_color_mode here], making launching Creatures 2 much easier, and removing the need to change the color depth back when finished.

==Interesting facts==
* In the initial Creatures 2 [[genome]]s, [[Norn]]s have 771 genes, while [[Grendel]]s have 547 genes and [[Ettin]]s 597 genes
* Nearly half of the genes in each [[creature]] control [[pose]]s and appearance; the rest are concerned with [[biochemistry]], [[organ]]s and [[brain]] structures
* The first creature in Creatures 2 was a Norn called Alice
* A Macintosh port of Creatures 2 was begun by long time (Millennium/ Cyberlife) programmer and wise old sage Keith Hook. Keith took over the management of the Origin2 project and the port was passed to a contractor. Unfortunately this work was never finished and Mindscape lost interest in the project.
* The Creatures 2 inside box art features a mysterious Norn that appears to have the limbs and hairstyle of a Purple Mountain Norn, but with a more modern-looking body and main head. It is unknown what this Norn was intended to be.

==History of Creatures 2==
Creatures 2 was widely anticipated. It is likely that around 450,000 copies of the original [[Creatures]] had been sold by the time the game was released, and a huge following had developed behind it.

Unfortunately, the Creatures 2 launch did not go as planned. The [[Early Adoption Program]] failed to deliver on its basic promise of being "early", and the game had several major flaws, the most notable of which was a [[Creatures 2 (genome)|deficient norn genome]] that lead to [[OHSS]]. [[Cyberlife]] was subsequently accused of gouging customers when they released a [[Life Kit]] with an improved genome (as well as other features) but neglected to release this as a patch to the original game until several weeks had passed.

In addition, documentation was considered scanty, especially by those who had owned [[Creatures]] - much appeared to have been reserved for the strategy guidebook, [[Creatures 2: Official Strategies & Secrets]]. This could be a result of tighter deadlines for the manual rather than than the book (considering Mindscape's requirements for translation, packaging and distribution) or publisher-related editing of the manual for simplicity. However, these reasons did not go down well with people who had just bought a $40 game only to find that the manual's instructions for getting norns to feed [http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.games.creatures/browse_frm/thread/d81ff511d1cbccaf/cacb34114bc1eaa4 did not work reliably].

Overall, Creatures 2 was probably a commercial success (despite inadequate marketing, which affected subsequent games as well) - however, it could be seen as a strategic failure, as for many it compromised the trust between the [[Creatures Community|community]] and [[Cyberlife]]. Much had been promised, and yet many users considered the only improvement over the original to be the graphics. [[Third-party]] developers were naturally less willing to work on a game that they did not really enjoy playing, and this probably affected the supply of [[COB]]s. Things improved after the development of the [[Canny Norn]]s and [[Nova Subterra]], but some people had lost interest by then, and it is impossible to say how many people would have become part of the community but never found out about the improved genomes and so grew prematurely tired of the game.

I have been playing Creatures since around 2000-ish, and didn't really understand what to do at the time, being a fairly young player, and I stopped playing it after I updated DirectX (which caused the game to break).
I found my discs again in 2013 and got the [http://www.gog.com/game/creatures_the_albian_years GoG version] so I could start playing again.

Since then, I've really got into the swing of the game. Having followed [[Helen]]'s tutorials on her site as to how to play properly, I've since become a fairly successful player. Through experimentation, I'm learning how to use the genetics kit, and have thus far only created one simple breed variation (a purple version of the Frog norn) as well as some particularly helpful gene modifications for making the game a little easier.

If you want to contact me about anything Creatures, feel free, though I might not receive your message for a while.

== Summary of Content ==

The English part of Mummy's Creatures website is mostly translated stuff from the bigger German section of the page. For [[Creatures 2]] and [[Creatures 3]] / [[Docking Station]] you'll find a lot of [[norn]]s to download as well as [[breed]]s, [[COB]]s, [[egg]] [[sprite]]s and [[agent]]s. There's also a clearly laid-out overview of all [[breed]]s existing for [[Creatures 2]] and [[Creatures 3]].

In the German section you'll find a lot of information, tips and [[cheat]]s for [[Creatures 2]] and [[Creatures 3]] and a smaller amount for [[Creatures 1]].

For [[Creatures 1]] you'll find:
*[[norn]] [[breed]] lists (with pictures for [[breed]]s with new [[sprite]]s)
*a small gallery with pictures for everyone to take and work with
*a special link list of the more and more disappearing but still sought-for C1 [[:Category:Websites|websites]]
*[[COB]]s, [[world]]s and of course [[norn]]s to download
*[[Pow-Wow Norn]]s
*[[Wood Norn]]s
You'll also find special events ("[[Aktion]]en") started by [[Mummy]] (and their results) for everyone to participate in, such as [[Aktion Farbtopf]], [[Aktion Pentatypus]], [[Aktion Millennium Norn]], [[Aktion Limited Edition]] and [[Aktion Breed Detective]].

Mummy also operates [[Mummy's Creatures Forum]].

== History of Website ==

Having played [[Creatures]] since 1997, [[Mummy]] (the author of '''Mummy's Creatures''') started her website on 20 June 1999. The design looked completely different from the current one and there were of course only two sections: one for [[Creatures 1]] (just a page with [[norn]]s to download) and one for [[Creatures 2]] with a [[breed]] list, [[norn]]s, [[COB]]s, a name list for norns as well as already a very large link list.

[[Creatures 3]] appeared on the market at the beginning of 2000, and soon Mummy's Creatures opened a third section to cater for it.

In May 2000, as [[Mummy]] realised that her site was known already to a bigger audience than just the German Creatures Community, the English section was opened and some of the content of the German section got translated.

As the site now grew big and bigger, the site's navigation got more and more confusing, therefore [[Mummy]] decided that the site needed a major update. She fused somewhat the previously separated Creatures sections and made the navigation easier. This design held out for 2 years, and in 2002 with all the new breeds, events, norns, informations etc. the site had already grown to more than 200 pages. The site then underwent another redesign showing the now actual outlook.

The full history of Mummy's Creatures can be read (in German) on the website: [http://www.creatures.de/history.htm history of Mummy's Creatures] ([http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/trurl_pagecontent?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.creatures.de%2Fhistory.htm&lp=de_en babelfish translation])

== Interesting Facts ==

*[[Mummy]] likes the colour blue, as you can see by the actual design and the mascot of her site, called "Fluffy" that was given to her by [[Zauberfee]] and [[Tica]].

*At the bottom of the index page, there's a link to a small statistics page about the site. It says that Mummy's Creatures usually gets between 150 and 200 hits per day!

* On 2nd February 2011, Mummy's Creatures was awarded the [http://creaturescaves.com/forum/viewTopic.php?ID=3176 Bibble Award], along with [[Creatures Caves]] and [[The Creatures of Avalon]], for the best Creatures Websites.
[[File:SplicerC2.png|thumb|left|314px|Creatures 2 Gene Splicer]]The '''genetic splicer''' can be found in both [[Creatures 2]] and [[Creatures 3]]. On both versions you load two different creatures (Norn, Ettin or Grendel) into the machine and press a button or switch. The two creatures' [[DDNA|dDNA]] is then cut apart and mixed together to create a single new creature. The original two creatures are killed in the process.

There is, however, a glitch in Creatures 2 which allows you to save one of the victims of your genetic experiments. If you watch the cages carefully after starting the splicing process, you will have a short time after the purple flashes appear to press the button on one of the cages. Timing is critical, but if you press the button quickly enough ''after'' the flashes start, the flashes in that cage will freeze and the creature in the cage will be saved while still becoming part of the resulting spliced creature.[[File:SplicerC3.png|thumb|318px|Creatures 3 Gene Splicer]] If this method goes wrong, however, you can end up wit the purple flashes stuck, the creature unable to get out. If the splicer is re-run, it will create an egg that will never hatch.

An alternate, safer method to prevent the death of spliced creatures is to use the [[SafeSplice]] [[COB]], for which a guide can be found [http://www.webpetz.com/creatures/tips-splicing.php here].

In both games the splicer must be activated by pressing switches or collecting [[power-up]]s.

In Creatuers 2, creatures that are old or dying may be saved by putting them in the splicer on their own. The original will be destroyed, and a fresh egg containing a clone of the creature will be produced.

In Creatures 2, when the family tree of the new creature is examined, you will notice that the parents are the two creatures that you combined. It will also say mother and father on the birth certificate, regardless of genders of the original creatures. (currently not tried in Creatures 3)

[[Image:Hatchingnorn.jpg|right|frame|Their life is in your hands - so don't mess it up!]]
Nestled in the '''Hatchery''' are the last six [[egg]]s of [[norn]]kind... It is your job to raise them. By running the [[hand]] over them, it is possible to discern their gender, and doubleclicking them [[inject]]s them into [[Albia]]. Norns born from hatchery eggs are in generation 1, and are direct descendants of [[Ron]] and [[Eve]].

If you do run out of hatchery eggs in [[Creatures]], the [[Emergency Kit]] can help you.

==Trivia==
* In Creatures 2 GoG edition (not tested for original Creatures 2), if an illegal egg file is put into the Eggs folder, upon opening the Hatchery, a message would appear alerting the player to there being an illegal egg file, the hatchery would contain eggs, and when the user clicked Help->Advanced Options to put more eggs into the hatchery, the resulting window would be dysfunctional and would be entitled, "If U can C this, I am sh1t".

''To hatch C1 original eggs in C2, get the [[Hatchery Expansion]] from [[The Wyvern's Lodge]].''
''Caution: Using the Hatchery in [[Creatures - The Albian Years]] can cause the game to lag.''

'''Blueberry4$''' and '''The Coconut Grove''' are [[cheats]] for [[Creatures 2]]. From [[Juli's Norn Pad]]:

''Contrary to common belief, there are actually two different cheats for [[Creatures 2]]. This is the same as in [[Creatures]]. First, you must choose which cheat works best for you. The '''Blueberry Cheat''' is the most often used of the cheats. It gives you extra menus, the ability to pick up your norns anytime, instant vocabulary, instant aging, and many other things you can do. '''The Coconut Grove''' cheat does all the same things as the Blueberry Cheat, except your world is not automatically loaded when you start the game. The Coconut Grove cheat is recommended for people who maintain more than one world.''

Please note that the Coconut Grove cheat is incompatible with [[Life Kit]] #1. If you have Life Kit #1, you may only use the Blueberry cheat or your game will crash!

'''Did you know?'''
*'''Blueberry4$''' is a reference to the [[Blueberry]] ransom
*'''The Coconut Grove''' is the name of [[Ben Simpson | Ben Simpson's]] garden bar (actually a shed with a serving hatch and a shed-load of booze) that played host to many summer parties.

==Method One==
To enable the Blueberry4$ cheat for any [[Creatures 2]] release except [[The Albian Years]]:

Load [[BoBCoB]], in it's Tools menu, select Preferences, then the Cheats tab, click on the 'Blueberry4$' checkbox and click 'Okay'.

''[[Don]] will expand the [[Creatures Remastered Patch]] to support this [[cheat]] shortly as well.''

==Method Two==
To activate the cheat code:
# Make sure Creatures 2 is not running.
# Click on the Start button and select Run....
# Type "regedit.exe" in the dialogue box that appears and click on OK.
# Open the folder entitled HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
# Open the folder entitled Software.
# Open the folder entitled Cyberlife Technology.
# Open the folder entitled Creatures 2.
# Open the folder entitled 1.0.
# On the right hand side of the registry editor you will now see a list of items. The fourth one down is called Privileges. Double click on that.
# A dialogue box should have just popped up. In the field delete the word that is there, and type in "Blueberry4$" for the Blueberry cheat or "The Coconut Grove" for The Coconut Grove cheat.
# Click OK and close the registry.

'''Note''': If for some reason you feel that you may have done this wrong, don't panic. If worst comes to worst then you can always reinstall Creatures 2. Always keep a backup file of any C2 extras you have downloaded on a floppy disk (or CD-R) in case you have to do this.

If you have the [[The Albian Years]] version of Creatures 2, each world has its own registry entry, so you have to open a different set of folders within the Registry Editor:
# Open the Registry Editor as noted above.
# Open the folder entitled HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
# Open the folder entitled Software.
# Open the folder entitled Gameware Development.
# Open the folder entitled World Switcher.
# Open the folder with the name of the world you wish to activate the cheat in, or 'Default Info' to make the cheat activate in new worlds.
# Open the folder entitled 1.0.
# Continue as noted above, remembering that the inclusion of Life Kit #1 means you can only use the Blueberry4$ cheat.

==Uses==

*The Blueberry4$ cheat allows for Norns (and Grendels/Ettins etc.) to be accessed and exported in a passworded world, if you have forgotten the password. Simply enable the cheat for the locked world and a non-passworded world, open the non-passworded world, then goto World→Open World... and navigate to where the locked world is stored (usually in your Documents).

[[Image:C1computer.png|right|frame|C1 Learning Computer]]
In [[Creatures]], the '''Computer''' taught [[Norn]]s how to speak the [[Handish]] [[language]] (as opposed to [[bibble]]) - only [[verb]]s, though.

'''Did you know?''' Early versions of Creatures featured a blackboard for teaching words.

In [[Creatures 2]], there were two '''learning computers'''. The one in the [[incubator]] room taught the [[norn]]s simple [[verb]]s, such as '[[push]]', '[[eat]]', and '[[rest]]'. The second one, on the level below, taught norns more abstract [[concept]]s, such as feelings: '[[coldness|cold]]', '[[pain]]', '[[hunger|hungry]]', etc. Some creatures, however, would fail to learn the meanings of words, just the word itself, and would not perform any actions when told the verb.

[[Creatures 3]] had the [[Learning Room]].

[[Ali]] made a [[Computer COB]] for Creatures 1.
[[Helen]] made a portable [[Easy Talk Computer]] for Creatures 2.
