'''''The Planiverse''''' (ISBN 0-387-98916-1) is a novel by [[A. K. Dewdney]], written in 1984.

In the spirit of [[Edwin Abbott Abbott]]'s ''[[Flatland]]'', Dewdney and his computer science students designed a vertical 2D world (i.e. East-West and Up-Down, no N-S) and considered the issues of [[biology]] and [[society]] for the inhabitants.

To their surprise, they find their artificial 2D universe has somehow accidentally become a means of communication with an actual 2D world - ''Arde''.
They make a sort of "[[telepathic]]" contact with Yendred, a highly philosophical Ardean (or Nsana, as they call themselves), as he begins a journey across the single continent ''Ajem Kollosh'' to learn more about a mysterious philosophy the inhabitants of his destination have.

The students and narrator communicate with Yendred by typing on the keyboard, and Yendred describes how he "feels" their thoughts in his head. For Yendred's replies, he thinks an answer, and it appears on the computer's printout.

Written as a [[Travel literature|travelogue]], Yendred crosses the world to reveal its features, explaining to the students diverse topics such as the [[politics]], [[geography]], [[construction]] (all houses are underground, for example, so as not to impede movement), [[tool]]s (nails are useless for attaching two objects, tape and glue are used instead), [[biology]] (there is no digestive tract in most Ardean creatures, because of the danger of splitting into two, but evolution devised a solution), [[astronomy]], and even [[games]] (such as [[Alak]]), all designed for 2D. The book is much more practical and has less [[social commentary]] than ''Flatland''.
*'''Ran from/to dates''': 22 April 2006 - Current

The '''Blackstar Dojo''' is a role-playing forum, created by [[TheDarkPsycho]], also known as The Sensei. Officially launched on April 22, 2006, Blackstar has grown tremendously over its short existence, currently being home to almost 80 members and climbing. Many of the current residents are or were formerly known on other boards and forums, including the [[Gameware Forums]], [[Albia2000]], and the [[Evil Council]].

==Location==
Blackstar is currently hosted at http://blackstar.inkwell.com.ru/index.php by [[Violet]], who was kind enough to provide space on his server.

==History==
*'''Beginnings'''
''Where there had once been nothing, a new place emerged... With his ascension from spirit to Godhood, Au'Mauri, the God of Insanity created Psychotopia; a world within a world, held inside a small, unassuming building, powered by Warp Portal technology. And thus did [[TheDarkPsycho]], God of many names, shape the land, crafting his realm. And when it was done, he called for others to come, and so they did, one by one, to live as Dojodians and perfect their art.''

[[TheDarkPsycho]]: I felt it was time to create a place for RP'ing. Most sites in the CC exist for Creatures first, and RP'ing second. And that was the way things were since Treesprite's creatures grove shutdown (no comment). So I took it upon myself to create such a site. And Blackstar is the end product. Enjoy!

*'''RP Olympics'''
The RP Olympics, plagued with server and hosting troubles, were originally running on a different sever, [[AL37]]'s [http://in.carnadine.co.uk/forum Incarnadine] (currently down). Due to unfortunate events, the entire database was lost, and the RP Olympics were restarted on the Blackstar site. Round 1 went smoothly, up until the end of July 2006, when a setback put the entire Dojo on ice temporarily.

*'''The July Crisis'''
On the 26th of July, 2006, [[Violet]]'s inkwell server exceeded its allotted 5GB of bandwidth, bringing down Blackstar, the EC Forums, and everything else hosted at inkwell. Blackstar was the primary culprit, eating up 4.15GB of bandwidth, a victim of its own success. When the forums reopened on August 1st, 2006, steps were taken to reduce bandwidth usage, primarily by disabling Prillian, the IM service.

==Features==
Blackstar contains a wealth of features, including four different currencies, (The Yen, The Cornelius Life, The Gerbil, and The Soul), a Bank Interest and Loan system, Ranks for numbers of posts and account age, Stores with purchasable items and services, a Stock Exchange, and Medals.

The Blackstar Dojo also has its own PM system as well as an Instant Messaging system called Prillian, but due to bandwidth issues, the IM system is currently offline.

==Role-Play Style==
Intended as a role-play site for everyone, The Dojo is "The place for Masters and Pupils Alike" to develop and perfect their skills at role-playing.

Blackstar is a freeform RP site, where there are generally no game masters, no extensive rule sets, and few restrictions on character types/styles. This does not mean it is without structure or limits, however. The Dojo is governed by these rules:
*Show respect to others, as you would ask them to respect you.
*Respect the decisions of the Admins and heed the guidance of the Moderators.
*Powerplaying and offensive language are not tolerated.
*Role-playing is intended to be fun, so any conflicts should be centered on characters, not the players running them.
*Proper spelling and grammar is highly encouraged, and everyone's eyes will thank you for it.

The Blackstar Dojo uses a variation of the [[Evil Council]]'s Standardized Role-play rules. A complete guide is currently in progress.

When the [[Creatures Evolution Engine]] was ported from Windows through [[Linux]] to the [[Macintosh|Mac]] OS X, several changes in the engine occurred. These changes are detailed here.
__TOC__
==Mac Compatibility with Windows/Linux files Overview==
''See [[Macintosh Compatibility]] and [[Macintosh Conflicts]] for more detail''
*[[Agent]]s are compatible
Confirmed. Docking Station testing with third party agents has been successful.
Injection of agents into Creatures 3 has not been tested.

*[[Metaroom]]s are compatible but may be unstable
Tentative. Preliminary tests with metaroom installations have been successful, (i.e. the room will install correctly) but some metarooms cause the game engine to become very unstable.

*[[Docking Station#Breeds|Official Creatures Packs]] are compatible
Confirmed. To download official breeds, choose Linux downloads from the [[Creatures Mall]]. Official Breed Packs must be paid for; they are not free. Breeds tested sucessfully: [[Astro Norn]]s, [[Bondi Norn]]s, [[Hardman Norn]]s, [[Siamese Norn]]s, [[Treehugger Norn]]s, and [[Zebra Norn]]s. [[Banshee Grendel]]s are reported as incompatible. The [[Quirky Cookie Machine]] from the Treehugger Pack will only work if the Catalogue files are correctly placed.

*Third Party [[Breed]]s are compatible
Tentative. Preliminary testing of add-on breeds has been successful.

*[[Adoption]]s are compatible
Confirmed. No known problems or modifications are needed to import creatures.

==Installing New Agents, Metarooms or Breeds==
To use [[third party]] files, you need to follow these steps.
#Find the Creatures 3 or DockingStation Application. They should be located in your Hard Drive/Applications folder.
#Control (right) click on either the Creatures 3 or DockingStation icon.
#Select "Show Package Contents" from the menu. It should be the third item from the top.
#Open the Contents folder.
#Open the MacOS folder.
#Open the data folder. (Creating a shortcut or alias to this folder is highly recommended. You'll be visiting here often.)
##Drop .agent files into the My Agents folder
##Drop .cos files into the Boostrap/010 Docking Station or Bootsrap/001 World folder.
#Go to [[Engineering]] (C3) or the [[Comms Room]] (DS) to inject your new agent.
#Once you have injected the agent, check your UserName/Library/Preferences/Creatures Labs/Docking Station or Creatures 3/data/Catalogue folder for any new .catalogue files. You have to move these.
#Move any new .catalogue files from into Hard Drive/Applications/Docking Station or Creatures 3/Contents/MacOS/data/Catalogue.

That's it, you're done! If your agent doesn't have a catalogue file, you can skip the last two steps.

==Uninstalling New Agents, Metarooms or Breeds==

===From a World===
*To uninstall a metaroom from a world, first go to the Comms Room or Engineering and click the red uninstall button. The metaroom should now be empty of agents. Then use the 'kill hots' [[C3/DS CAOS Codes|CAOS cheat]] on the [[Favourite Place]] icon for the metaroom.

===From your Computer===

'''C12DS''' is an addon [[metaroom]] for [[Creatures 3]] and [[Docking Station]], faithfully recreating the [[Creatures 1]] [[Albia]] in all its glory, with several new useful features. The project was also known as '''C1 to DS''' and the '''C1 Metaworld''' before 'C12DS' was coined in an announcement news post by [[AntiNorn]]. It was begun in [[history#2000|July 2000]] and released five years later, [[history#2005|August 2005]], at the end of the [[CCSF 2005|CCSF]].

Although the metaroom has been released, the team hopes to add more features and fix bugs via patches.

==History==
Since the project's inception, the team underwent many changes under [[Lacota]]. Currently only [[Lacota]] and [[Clucky]] are working on the project.

Started July 12th 2000, C12DS was Lacota's dream, brought on by a conversation with [[Hex]], who had expressed her distaste for the gloom of the [[Docking Station]] artwork. The first three months of the project were led by [[Lacota]] and [[Apollo]], completing what was then called the "Beta 1". This was a collection of uncompressed [[agent]] files, and an entire metaroom layout consisting of 150 rooms plotted by hand (this was before the [[Room Editor]] became available).

There was a slow period of around a year. This is when [[Clucky]] entered the project. The project went through several ups and downs depending on the availability of people on the team. On Boxing Day (26th December) [[History#2003|2003]], the [http://www.gamewaredevelopment.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=115 Public Beta was released]. Work slowed to a crawl as members became fewer and fewer; however, the persistence of [[Clucky]] and [[Lacota]] has kept the project going.

The C12DS project was at one point brought to a screeching halt due to some legal questions that were raised. The issue was solved with the following requirements, in an agreement with [[Creature Labs]]:

* Only things found in the Freeloader.com version could be used.
* It must require either [[Docking Station]] or [[Creatures 3]] to be installed.
* It could not be sold for a profit.

C12DS was [http://www.gamewaredevelopment.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=3315 released] after five years of effort on the 14th of August, [[History#2005|2005]], as a part of the [[CCSF 2005|Creatures Community Spirit Festival]].

==Contents==
In its final, released state, C12DS contains:

Many thanks to [[Alexander Laemmle]] and [[Stefan Kuske]], who originally compiled this document!

This list is not exhaustive, or anywhere near complete – if you know an object’s [[class number]], please edit this so that we can put it on the list! If a [[COB]] has no-one’s name against it, it was either; created by [[Cyberlife]], or I don’t know who made it. If you know the [[COBbler]]'s name of an uncredited [[COB]], please edit this!
Having your [[COB]] on the list helps to publicise it among other [[COBbler]]s and helps prevent [[clash]]es!

Please note that the reason why the [[species|third numbers]] only go from 1-255 is because if you go further, the game clocks it over – so a [[food]] labelled 2 6 268 will be read by the game as 2 7 12, which will make the [[creature]]s think it’s a [[drink]], and also mingle with the [[script]]s for any object that uses that class number.

The Wiki also has a list of [[C3/DS_class_numbers]]. Script reservations for the other games are handled by [[Bibbleworld]]. Alternatively, try the [[Creatures Developer Network]].

Please remember to put <nowiki>[[Category:C1 COBs]]</nowiki> in the COB's article!
If you don't know the [[class number]] of a COB, please add it elsewhere in the wiki (the [[:Category:C1 COBs]] category is ideal) to begin with, and put a request to find the class number on the discussion page.

'''Norse mythology''' underpins a lot of the names in the [[Creatures series]]:

[[Image:Mythologic_Norns.jpg|right|frame|Norse mythology Norns]]

*[[Norn]]s are "the three old women who sit round a giant tree spinning men's fates, Urd (fate), Skuld (necessity) and Verdandi (being)."
Also the name of a language which descended from old Norse, which was spoken in the Shetland and Orkney islands. The extinction of the language is believed to have come about during the 15th century, when the islands were ceded to Scotland, and the new government discouraged the language.
*[[Grendel]], a descendant of Cain, the first murderer, is a terrifying monster who eats drunken men. [[Beowulf Norn|Beowulf]] defeats him bare-handed, and later fights with, and kills, the [[Grendel Mother|Grendel's mother]].
*[[Grendel Tree|Yggsdrasil]] was the World Tree, binding heaven, hell and earth.
*The [[Shee]], or more properly, Sidhe (Siðe), were faerie folk. They must have seemed all-powerful to the ordinary humans, as are the [[Shee]] to the other [[Creatures]].
*The [[Banshee]] were faerie women who sang funeral dirges for the five great clans of Scotland. To hear a banshee foretold a death in the family, however to see a banshee foretold your own death.
*The [[Ettin]]s were two or three-headed creatures of English mythology who liked to ask riddles.
*[[Albia]], or rather, Albion, was the name for the ancient island of Britain.
*Geatland is another name for Gotland, an island which nowadays is in Sweden and [[Geat]]s were the Scandinavian inhabitants of that island. According to Jordanes and modern archaeological finds, Geats are, in reality, the same as the Goths.
*[[Borland|Jörmungandr]] was a giant sea serpent that encircled [[Midgard]], holding its tail in its mouth. One of the children of the trickster god, Loki.
*[[Mjollnir]] was Thor's hammer, used in combat and the cause of thunder.
*[[Niflheim]] is a region of darkness and cold - it is the lowest level of the universe, underneath Yggsdrasil's roots.
* [[Purple Mountains|Ragnarok]] is the Norse name for the battle in which all gods will die, along with all people (except Lif and Lifrasthir, who will restart all humankind). The sun will be eaten by a giant wolf, and giants will go to war. It was said that it would be 'the end of the world'.

[[Steve Grand]] was not unaware of where he had got his material from. Indeed, in a [http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.games.creatures/browse_frm/thread/7375085c93b184f4/68b0ba2115def82d?q=&_done=%2Fgroups%3Fenc_author%3DNEh2bRgAAABpnzTRIR4pTfVqJv-9flJkWKLNRqB-u4_S4z0CNL-NQg%26&_doneTitle=Back+to+Search&&d#68b0ba2115def82d rare posting] to [[alt.games.creatures]] he mentioned that:
The '''Ghost/Phantom Norns''' are a new breed variant by [[Marcus Kurzbac]], created as part of the "[http://home.arcor.de/frsiglmu/c4/english/index.html Creatures-the Next Generation]" project. This is a subspecies which occurs in several standard breeds, and thus occupies no special breed slot of its own.

==Species Specifics==
*The Ghost/Phantom Norns all possess a [[mutation]] which (when combined with Marcus' [[Invisibility Agent]]) gives them the ability to become invisible whenever scared. They return to being visible when they calm down, or when they've been tickled.
They are the result of an experiment similar to the [[Cardinal Norn]]s. These [[Norn]]s probably have slightly increased intelligence and eating habits. They follow the herds of carrot beetles and gather food. Most like to hang around the island. (They have lived in a [[Grendel]] and [[weed]] free world.) They use the [[Purple Mountain Norn]] [[sprite]]s due to a prolific Norn named Nate who had about 10 kids, bred with his female kids and his mother until every single Norn in [[Albia]] looked just like him.

==Important Questions==
===Why do they do it?===
:''Some Norn torturers feel that there is too much 'cuteness' in the Creatures Community, and rebel against it, while others like to see what the limit of their Norn's endurance is. They argue that Norns are not alive, merely images on a computer screen, and try to shock people into seeing this for themselves. Of course, a lot of players don't like this . . . '' -- [[Lis Morris]], [[newsletter#Much Ado About Norns|Much Ado About Norns 4]]

The roots of norn torture were most likely [[Wikipedia:sadism|sadism]], the enjoyment of seeing a cratures in pain. It should be noted that this is ''not'' the view proposed by [[AntiNorn]] - although the language of [[Tortured Norns|his website]] suggested this, his claim was that he did it to make people think about whether it was wrong or not (and quite possibly to get people he considered as amusing pissed off at him).

===Are [[Norn]]s Alive?===
In the second edition of [[newsletter#Much Ado About Norns|Much Ado About Norns]], [[Creatures]] players were asked whether or not they considered norns to be alive. According to issue four, many believed so. [[AntiNorn]] stated that he did not believe that norns were alive, and therefore his actions had, if anything, only a symbolic meaning. On the other hand, those who do actually ''enjoy'' it must logically believe that norns '''are''' alive, as otherwise why do it? A non-living thing cannot suffer! It seems reasonable to conclude if there are any "for real" norn-torturers out there, they believe that the creatures they "torture" are alive.

===Can Creatures Feel Pain?===
It is generally accepted that it is not possible to punish a thing that cannot feel pain; this might of course be linked to the fact that most living animal-shaped things that we care about ''do'' feel pain (and this could change should we create androids which we personally value as "alive" but which cannot feel physical pain). Thus, the art of [[Wikipedia:bonsai|bonsai]] is not viewed as plant torture but merely as an unusual method of cultivation to achieve a desired effect. If you take the view that creatures are not alive, then they can obviously not feel pain. But if you accept that the are alive, then they quite clearly can feel pain, just as they feel hungry or tired - it is a part of their simulated universe.

===Is it Torture, or Testing?===
It would be possible to view [[The Creatures Match]] as a norn torture site, given the objective (to test one creature against one another - to the death) and the way in which the subject matter is treated:

:''"What do you think of the place? I didn't design this building with visitors in mind."
:''"Actually," you wince, "all the dead bodies and killing the winners... I'm a little freaked." You hope he won't overreact.
:''A stern look comes over his face. "Great, a pro-norner. Next, you're going to develop some speech impediment and attack me and I'll need to call security."
:''"I have no idea what you're talking about."
:''"Well..." he hesitates, "some people have moral problems with The Creatures Match. But those moral problems don't conflict with them attacking us in various ways. So, we're on the lookout for terrorists. Not that we're really vulnerable or anything." ''

===Why ''Pain'' specifically?===
''Pain'' is just a drive like fear, or hunger. Why is it generally ''Pain'' people refer to when talking of Norn Torture?

===Equal Rights for Grendels!===
Grendel torture has never gotten as much attention as norn torture has, even though the game manual has described grendels as 'evil'. There are many COBs and agents specifically designed to torture grendels available from mainstream sites. See [[The Truth About Grendels]] and [[Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Grendels]].
220.237.30.150https://creatures.wiki/index.php?title=Norn_torture&diff=14382Norn torture2006-06-24T22:53:02Z
220.237.30.150: moving A definition of norn torture? to the response section, as it is a response by AntiNorn to the anti-AntiNorners.

:'''''Note''': There is a lot to be said about norn torture - please use the [[Talk:Norn_torture|talk page]] for this. The article should be restricted to factual statements on norn torture or groups of people's reactions to it.''

'''Torture''' is defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as:
:''Infliction of severe physical pain as a means of punishment or coercion.''

'''Norn torture''' is the abuse of [[norn]]s - and, by extension, other [[creature]]s - either by simple means such as slapping or by more "interesting" means (such as [[gengineer]]ing a norn to be a chronic alcoholic, be always afraid or in pain, or throwing them to a pack of [[grendel]]s, et cetera, et cetera).

Norn torture has long been a controversial subject in the [[Creatures Community]]. Probably every owner has at one time or another has applied the [[hand]] to the backside of a [[Creature]] - indeed, [[Lis Morris|Lis Morris's]] [[Boney Grendel]]s were specifically designed to run away if spanked - and some would argue that the difference between torture and discipline is just a matter of degree.

[[Steve Grand]] even predicted norn torture (or at least slaughter) in his [http://web.archive.org/web/20010212093320/www.creatures.co.uk/Library/History/lib_history_norn.htm norn concept writings]:
:''Equally appealing to children and adults, men and women. Something you wouldn't be ashamed to keep on your office PC. Something a naturalist would want to study, a father would want to teach soccer, a granny to dress up and a complete b***ard to butcher mercilessly.''

Norn torture first came to light with a [http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?threadm=1998042603554200.XAA13672%40ladder03.news.aol.com newsgroup post] by a supposed norn-torturer. In response, [[AntiNorn]] [http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?threadm=6i6psm%24ccv%240%40208.136.119.185 put up a site] called [[Tortured Norns]] dedicated to the activity and those who perform it, including his first tortured norn, [[Slave]]. He subsequently added more tortured norns, pictures, torture-enabling [[COB]]s and even recipes (the real-life equivalent of [[Breaded Hatchling Norn]]). A somewhat less contentious website called [[Feral Farms]] was also created by [[Melantha Bacchae]].

==What was the response?==
Although the tone of response was predictable, the scale of it probably caught [[AntiNorn]] by surprise. He reports having received death threats on several occasions, and claims that many of the emails he recieved were unprintable (even on '''his''' site). Many people restricted themselves to public expressions of disgust in response to his actions. A protest group was set up calling itself [[Equal Rights For Norns]], and members of the [[Creatures Community]] attempted to bring his site down at various times by claiming that it was in violation of hosting guidelines.

AntiNorn appeared to care little for this, and a few other sites started up, but they never gained as much attention. However, as well as all the flaming, the situation did lead to a certain amount of discussion on [[alt.games.creatures]] over whether or not norns were alive. It brought a focus to the issue that had (perhaps) not been present beforehand.

AntiNorn wrote an article: [http://web.archive.org/web/20000818034948/www.homecreatures.com/features/torture1.phtml A definition of Norn Torture?] which examines the attitude of some norn keepers towards their norns and to him, by using 'real life' analogies.
'''Creatures''' is the first game in the [[Creatures series]] ([[:Category: Creatures games|full listing]]). The game is no longer available by itself, but can be purchased as part of [[Creatures - The Albian Years|Creatures: The Albian Years]]. The word [[Creature]]s is also used in plural to refer to the [[A-life]] animals which are the focus of the games.

==Creatures, the Game==
[[Image:Hatchingnorn.jpg|right|frame|A hatching [[Norn]]]]
The original Creatures game was set in [[Albia]]. It featured [[Norn]]s, [[Grendel]]s, and a few minor inhabitants of Albia to occupy the player's creatures. There was no set objective - although players were given a "score" in the [[Breeder's Kit]], no restrictions were placed on gameplay, and [[breed]]ers, [[COBbler]]s, and even [[norn torture]]rs were free to pursue their own objectives. The game was limited by the technology of [[history#1996|1996]], being restricted to a 256-colour palette (background images are available at [[C2 Back]]), bamboo architecture and occasional background sounds rather than the ambient [[music]] which evolved in later titles.

== Interesting Facts ==
* A ''real'' [[background model|model]] was used to create the [[Albia]]n backdrop in Creatures.
* The original boxed edition of the game was accompanied by a helpful booklet, [[The Chronicles of Nornia]].
* Creatures was first pitched by [[Steve Grand]] in the form of a 'Mouse for Windows' - a little desktop pet that would need to be fed and watered, and who would interact with the desktop icons and windows. [[Millennium]] didn't bite.
* A second attempt at a pitch was dubbed 'Little Computer Ewoks' (compare [[Wikipedia:Little Computer People|Little Computer People]]) by [[Steve Grand|Steve]] himself, for lack of a better name. It is interesting to note that this proposal appears to be the earliest manifestation of Creatures as we know it today. It also interesting to note that the phrase 'Little Computer Ewoks' was also used by [[Erin|Erin's]] father when he was first shown the game!
* The development title for Creatures was eventually set to '[[Small Furry Creatures]]' - the game also became known as 'Creatures 1' (or just 'C1') after [[Creatures 2]] was (eventually) released.
* Creatures was first envisaged and developed as a top-down adventure/RPG game set in the [[Wikipedia:Amazon Rainforest|Amazon]], where the player would find an abandoned norn community; much time was spent on this before deciding to base the game around the [[Alife]] concept itself (see ''[http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/vanimalspitch.htm vanimals]'')
* The final design of the norn as we know it is actually quite different that the original: Steve Grand originally imagined norns to be 'gawky and awkward' - early images of norns even resembled chickens!
* [[Grendel]]s were originally described as monsters, resembling huge, titanium spiders, complete with eight eyes and a voracious appetite for norn. Eek!
* As [[aging]] and [[disease]] was introduced late in the game (''see [[history]]''), the death of [[norn]]s was meant to be enforced by a gene... however, the gene misfired and had no effect! Norns died through [[illness]] though, as originally intended, which greatly pleased [[Steve Grand]].
* The music from the title movie ended up as part of a published CD from the Cyberlife musician [[Andrew Barnabas]] - you can listen to the extended version of ''[[Creatures Montage]]'' here!

==Game Requirements==
Creatures was published for two platforms - Windows 3.1/95, and Mac OS 7.5

The [[Creatures series]] of games has had a long and convoluted history. This page is dedicated to it, in particular the events surrounding the companies involved in their creation: [[Millennium]], [[Cyberlife]], [[Creature Labs]], [[Entraline]] and [[Gameware]].

A good overview from Development Director [[Ian Saunter]] is provided in:
* [http://www.gamewaredevelopment.co.uk/creatures_more.php?id=17_0_6_0_M8 A potted history of Creature Labs and Gameware Development (the official story)]

More on the relationship between the various companies can be found in:

Large amounts of this timeline were derived from [http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/creatures_history.htm Steve Grand's notes]. Many thanks to [[Steve Grand|Steve]] for providing this resource to the community!
==Timeline of Events==
''Don't hesitate to fill stuff in - and don't feel you have to restrict yourself to official doings, anything that has interest to the community is fine :-)''

===Pre-1992===
*'''Late 1986/Early 1987''': [[Steve Grand]] is inspired by his reading of ''[[wikipedia:The Planiverse|The Planiverse: Computer Contact With a Two-Dimensional World]]'' ([http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0387989161/ Amazon UK], [http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0387989161/ Amazon US]; at time of writing, probably a lot cheaper to buy from the US!) and suggests [[Creatures]] to his employers as an educational game - but there is no interest
*'''1988''': [[Millennium]] is founded by [[Michael Hayward]], [[Tony Beckwith]], [[Ian Saunter]] and one other - they remain for a few months in Michael's house before moving to a local science park; [[Steve Grand]] remembers suggesting [[Creatures]] again (although Ian has no memory of this, so perhaps this was to his old employers)
*'''1990''': [[Millennium]] release Hoverforce, Horror Zombies from the Crypt and Thunderstrike
*'''1991''': [[Millennium]] release Virtual Reality, Volume 2, Stormball, The Adventures of Robin Hood and James Pond 2: Codename: RoboCod (which makes a return 12 years later as [[James Pond: RoboCod]])

===1992===
*'''1992''': [[Millennium]] release Cyber Empires, The Aquatic Games, Daughter of Serpents, Global Effect and Rome AD 92
:''[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]: I remember Global Effect! Great game!
*'''September 1992''': [[Creatures]] is 'officially' conceived, although it will take years to develop fully into the game we know today. From [[Tips.txt]]:
:''The initial ideas for this project were conceived on a motel balcony in Winthrop, WA, USA in September 1992.''
*'''4 November 1992''': [[Steve Grand]] writes [http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/initialpitch.htm A Mouse for Windows]
*'''16 November 1992''': [[Steve Grand]] writes [http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/ewokspitch.htm Little Computer Ewoks]
*'''23 December 1992''': [[Steve Grand]] writes [http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/techproposal.htm Ewoks techie bit for proposal]

===1993===
*'''1993''': [[Millennium]] release James Pond 3: Operation Starfish
*'''8 March 1993''': [[Steve Grand]] writes [http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/mythography.htm Small Furry Creatures: A Mythography] (first use of [[Small Furry Creatures]] as title), which contains the first details of the [[Journey]], [[Grendel]]s (although not as we know them today), [[Ettin]]s (even dumber than they turned out) and the [[Shee]] (Siðe)
*'''1 June 1993''': First available notes from [[Steve Grand|Steve Grand's]] [http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/progdiary.htm programming diary] - very interesting reading
*'''18 July 1993''': [[Steve Grand]] writes the first fragments of a [[Creatures]]-themed novella, [[Wulf's Journey]], creating the first Creatures fiction story over three years before the game was actually released
*'''12 December 1993''': [[Steve Grand]] explains that the mythology is [http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/rationale.htm intended for background purposes], not as an actual plot line:
:''I never intended Creatures to be an adventure game or have a fixed plot at all - the idea was that you would create your own stories . . . But everyone had interpreted my mythography stuff far too literally, and people were trying to make Creatures into some kind of Norse adventure game . . .''
:''[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper's]] thought: '''"Viking Creatures: Norns with Horns!"'''''

===1994===
*'''3 May - 10 May 1994''' A prototype [[Secret Adventure Mode]] is documented in [[Steve Grand]]'s programming diary. [http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/progdiary.htm]
*'''6 July 1994''': [[Michael Hayward]] decides that the game needs more time to mature and that [[Steve Grand]] should "take the game out of the schedule" (see the [http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/progdiary.htm diary entry])
:''[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]: I think this was a very important decision - without the extra time for correct positioning and reworking, [[Creatures]] would never have been the game it turned out to be. Heck, it was still for DOS back then, and [[bibble]] hadn't even been conceived! :-)''
:It is also interesting to note the features described as possible for the rewrite, many of which would not be fully realized until [[Creatures 3]] or [[Docking Station]]: ''Decided to add 5 months to schedule; more gratuitous graphics; more facial expressions; new norns (monkeylike); everybody’s norn is unique; complete rethink and rewrite of code; add hooks for extensions; allow norns to travel from one person’s system to another, via disc or modem; buy new norns; possible speech in/out.''
*'''1 August 1994''': The [[Cheat]] menu is added
*'''10 October 1994''': Plans for DDE support are finalized, laying the foundations for [[:Category:C1 Tools|external tools]] to communicate with [[Creatures]]
*'''14 November 1994''': [[Michael Hayward]] first demonstrates the [[Creatures]] prototype to '''Warner Interactive''', who liken its breadth of appeal to that of the first spreadsheet, Visicalc
*'''20 November 1994''': [[Cyberlife]] is set up to develop and exploit [[Steve Grand|Steve Grand's]] ideas

===1995===
*'''23 January 1995''': [[Steve Grand]] has the idea of making a [[background model]] of the [[Creatures]] environment and digitising it; [[Mark Rafter]] agrees a few days later, and begins work on the model
*'''Mid-1995''': [[Cyberlife]] agrees a publishing deal with '''Warner Interactive''' and a advance of £1m is paid representing an estimated 200,000 units of sales; in fact, over half a million copies of the [[Creatures]] will eventually be sold, a large proportion overseas
*'''19 July 1995''': [[Creatures]] finally has a complete [http://fp.cyberlifersrch.plus.com/creaturesarchive/designdef.htm design definition] - as with most software development projects, it required actually building most of the program to fully define it . . .
===1996===
*'''10:50 am, 21 March 1996''': The first [[norn]] ever bred in captivity was born. He was called [[Cain]], son of [[Ron]] and [[Eve]].
*'''22 April 1996''': The twin spectres of [[disease]] and [[bacteria]] are introduced to [[Creatures]]
*'''November 1996''' The [[Cyberlife]] department has 10 people in it
*'''11 November 1996''': [[Creatures]] is released, selling 100,000 copies in the first month; its publishers - '''Warner Interactive''' - are quickly acquired by '''GT Interactive''', who become the new distributors
*'''December 1996''': [[Christmas Pack|Christmas Pack 1]] for [[Creatures]] is released - it has over 4000 downloads in the first week. The [[Object Injector Kit]] is included with the Christmas Pack. [http://web.archive.org/web/19970110042052/www.cyberlife.co.uk/creatures_shop_christmas_pack.htm]

'''''The Planiverse''''' (ISBN 0387989161) is a novel by [[A.

To their surprise, they find their artificial 2D universe has accidentally become a means of communication with an actual 2D world - ''Arde''. They make contact with Yendred, a highly philosophical Ardean, as he begins a [[rite of passage]] of Ardean society - "The Journey". Written as a [[travelogue]], the protagonist Yendred crosses the world to reveal its features. The book has much more practical design and less [[social commentary]] than ''Flatland''.

'''Albia''' is a small [[world]] whose most obvious distinguishing feature is that it is shaped like a disc or coin, spinning rapidly about its axis in such a way that its face stays at a constant angle to an external observer. It has one sun, about which it rotates in such a manner that the sun passes directly overhead from the west to the east.

Albian years last 8 of our hours, and these are divided into 4 seasons of 2 hours each. Each season contains 4 days - so a day is half an hour - due to the small size of the world and its odd geography nights can be chilly in places but it never really gets much darker than twilight.

==Geography and Travel==
The only stable ground in Albia are the thin edges, and so much development is crowded into these. Travel is along the surface of Albia, to the 'left' or 'right' - any [[Creature]] going 'forwards' or 'backwards' would find themselves falling off the edge, although given that centrifugal force almost exactly balances gravity, they would probably not fall very far. Given the lack of space, 'up' and 'down' have also been investigated, although given the general [[volcano|geographic instability]] and the fact that much construction work has been delegated to [[Ettin]]s, the latter choice has often proven the wisest. Other disc-shaped worlds appear to exist in the same universe as Albia, most notably [[Montu]] and [[Terra Nornia]].

==Natural Disasters==
Albia may not be traditionally spherical, but it is in other ways a typical planet, and is known to have at least one semi-active [[volcano]], subject to occasional eruptions. One such eruption drastically changed the face of the planet between the time of [[Creatures]] and [[Creatures 2]], revealing new [[Shee]] laboratories and incidentally wiping out numerous [[Creatures]]. There is some evidence that this eruption may have been deliberately triggered in AY1800 by the [[Lone_Shee|last Shee]] known to inhabit Albia, as part of the launch process for the living ship [[Capillata]] featured in [[Creatures 3]] and [[Docking Station]].

==Flora and Fauna==
[[Image:Frightenednorns.jpg|right|frame|Not all [[animal]]s are harmless . . .]]
Albia contains three types of [[Creatures]], all past experiments of the [[Shee]]:
*'''[[Norn]]s''': Short, squat, and cute - designed to serve [[tea]] and [[biscuit]]s and look good while doing it.
*'''[[Ettin]]s''': These monotone creatures are good with gadgets, but have a bad habit of walking off with any bit of machinery that catches their eye.
*'''[[Grendel]]s''': Large, green killing machines, these creatures like nothing better than to smash other creatures into pulp; fortunately, their massive bulk is matched to an equally miniscule brain.

Creatures are not the only living things in Albia - there are a wide variety of [[animals]] and [[plant]]s around. The most useful species include the Albian [[carrot]], [[bees]], the [[lemon]] vines, and various [[herb]]s. [[cheese|Albian cheddar]] is also widely available, although where it comes from is not precisely clear.

==Interesting facts==
*Albia - and indeed the whole [[Creatures series]] - was partially inspired by a book called ''[[wikipedia:The Planiverse|The Planiverse]]'' - see [[history]]
*A real [[background model|model]] was used to create the Albia backdrop in [[Creatures]]
*''Albia'' is also the name of a region on [[NationStates]]
*''Albia'' is the name of a city in Iowa, USA.
*''Albia'' or rather, Albion, was the name for the ancient island of Britain.
*The [[Shee]] used a different definition of a year - the [[Lone Shee]]'s Prologue tells us that the Shee made their [[creatures]] live in an 'accelerated time scale'.

The Crino Stories (secretly known as the Crino Chronicles) are a group of stories that are based around a [[Gargoyle Norn|gargoyle norn]] by the name of Crino. He works at a [[norn]] nursery, taking care of orphaned norns, but mostly talking to the world's [[Gaia|GAIA]], or fixing a problem made by the Inept [[hand]], the hand of the world. Also, his [[egg]] was laid by the [[grendel mother]] (this is a bug that the gargoyle norn had before the patch). The Crino stories were written by [[KC11]]. So far there are only two, but that will change soon. You can find them at [[KC11's Norn Site]].

==Characters==
Crino: Main Character. Janitor/Mechanic of the world, but is lazy, and often talks with the world's GAIA.

GAIA: Just like the Gaia created by someone, but is used to eat experiments that had gone wrong. She is a good friend to Crino, and constantly wonders why there is no male GAIA.

Inept Hand: The hand of the world, a blubbering, bumbling, buffoon. The only thing he can do right is take care of norns.

Astranova: One of the orphans at the norn nursery. Was laid by the [[ettin mother]]. Is an adolescent, and likes Crino.

Ernie: Crino's brother, but only called that because he was laid at the same time as Crino was, and they are rather similar.

The white [[ettin]]s: Sometimes called the "Creepy ettins", so far, they have only been referred to, but that will soon change. These ettins are a glowing white, that are born with freaky smiles on their faces, but if hit continuously, their mouths will drop. They act very much like grendels, or maybe more like vicious norns, where they hit a norn to death.

The '''Hierarchy Norns''' (or '''Choice Norns''') are a [[genetic breed]] created by [[Jasp]] for [[C1]].
[[Hunter-Gatherer Norn]]s, once available at [[The Rise of Norn Civilization]], are a [[genetic breed]] for [[C1]], bred by [[Zab]] ([[Elizabeth]]).

'''CAUTION''': At least some of these Norns have a mild [[Saturn]] [[gene]].

"Meet '''Quentin''', a gengineered grendel who likes norns. He doesn't constantly hit them like most grendels. In fact, he seems to mostly ignore them! Say goodbye to grendel misery. Quentin is the first of the new grendel breed the '''Peace Grendels'''.. once I figure out those egg files, there'll be more like him!

The Peace Grendels: Well, I've figured it out, now, so here for your playing pleasure are the Peace Grendels- A race of grendels that can safely mix with your norns (well, mine seem to get on ok!). This version has been altered to allow the female grendel head to appear in the egg layer agent after installation of patch 2."
Created by [[Lis Morris]], and formerly available at her website [[The Palace of the Evil Shee]]. Maybe mirrored at [[AmberCreatures]] in the future.
